The grant was awarded by a unanimous recommendation of the United Way’s Allocations Steering Committee. The Melillo Center is dedicated to serving the needs of Nassau County citizens who face mental illness, chemical dependency and homelessness. The funding will enable the Melillo Center to build upon the United Way’s belief that it takes an entire community working together to foster real and positive change.
"Our community partners are a vital part of fulfilling United Way’s mission of improving the lives of individuals and families on Long Island. These partners provide much needed direct services while United Way provides them with financial support," said Allocations Steering Committee Chair Elena Perez, from Bank of America.
The funding will allow the Melillo Center to further its mission to assist those in need of outpatient mental health and chemical dependence services along with housing assistance for individuals and families that experience the strain of psychiatric disabilities. Since its inception in 1977, the Melillo Center has grown to become a vital part of the Nassau County social services network. The Melillo Center currently assists in the housing needs of over 250 mental health customers throughout Nassau County.
According to Dr. Dan Vogrin, Executive Director of the Melillo Center, "This grant will provide our organization with the means to reach out to those in our community who need our help most. One agency, one group, one person can only foster so much change. But working together, in concert, different agencies, the business community, local governments and civic associations can band together to deliver real change for individuals in need, and for the community as a whole. This social ecosystem enables various charitable entities to work together along with local business and government to create real, positive change for an entire community."
"Long Island donors were very generous this past year allowing us to continue to support our community partners and have a real positive impact on Long Islander’s lives," said United Way of Long Island President and CEO Patrick Foye.
