Slant/Fin Corporation, a Long Island manufacturer of heating products founded in 1949 by Mel Dubin, has a well recognized history of supporting Philanthropic causes. The Melillo Center of Glen Cove has become a vital component of the Glen Cove’s social services network. Together, they have helped change lives by building on Mellilo Center Executive Director Dr. Daniel J Vogrin’s belief that the sum can make far more impact than its individual parts. In this case, the sum is a collaborative effort of the business community and social services agencies including Slant/Fin Corporation, the Glen Cove Chamber of Commerce, the Melillo Center and the Glen Cove Inter Agency Council.

This past winter, Slant/Fin Corporation, headquartered in Greenvale, with a facility in Glen Cove, donated a high efficiency boiler and baseboard heating to replace an aging system in one of the Melillo center’s group homes, located at 9 Highland Road. The installation was much needed as the homes, built in 1988, were in dire need of major renovations. This past winter was the first that afforded residents to live in the comfort of Slant/Fin baseboard heat. Slant/Fin plans to furbish another group home in time for next winter. "After the actual structure itself, the roof over our residents’ heads, there is no more pressing need for our housing services than an adequate and efficient heating system. Slant/Fin’s generous donation made a lot of lives better-12 lives in fact. That is why we are here, to partner with others who want to help those who need a hand in our society" says Dr. Vogrin.

Slant/Fin and the Melillo Center have much in common considering one is a private corporation and the other a not-for-profit agency. Both have been honored for their achievements in the community by the Glen Cove Chamber of Commerce. Donald Brown, Vice Chairman of Slant/Fin Corp., is the 2004 recipient of the Chamber’s Pinnacle Award for Corporate Excellence, while Dr. Vogrin received the Community Service Merit Award at this past year’s gala awards ceremony, held at the Glen Cove Waterfront.

Today, their partnership represents a vital component of the "social ecosystem" where the business and social service communities can work together for the benefit of all. This is all the more important for an organization such as the Melillo Center, which derives a majority of its income from ongoing programs and government grants, rather than from extravagant and costly fundraisers that often mean more money into the pockets of party planners, and less that goes toward those who need it most. More about this feel good story can be learned by reading the book detailing the history of this group home, called "9 Highland Road", which is available through Amazon and other book retailers.

Founded in 1977, the Melillo Center serves the housing needs of 250 mental health consumers throughout Nassau County. The Melillo Center offers outpatient mental health and chemical dependence services and a variety of residential services for individuals and families with psychiatric disabilities.
